The Heart Behind Relief Weekend
We hear so often about the parable of the Good Samaritan that we might actually forget what caused Jesus to tell the story – it was a scribe asking Him how to inherit eternal life. The scribe then questioned him, “Who is my neighbor?”
At that time, one would typically help someone because, at least eventually, they expected help in return.
Jesus challenged him – Your neighbor is someone with whom you may not have much in common. They may not even be a member of your own country. They may be someone that is risky to love and it might require significant sacrifice to love them. (Luke 10:25-37)
Life at its best…
Life at its best is experiencing Jesus living and loving through you.
Perhaps the reason it’s so exhilarating to love, feed, clothe and help “…the least of these” (Matt. 25:40) is that in those moments we’re imaging Him and His heart of compassion. We were created by Him to put Him “on display” (2 Cor. 2:14) in the real stuff of this world’s brokenness, suffering, and need.
While Good Shepherd has a year-round focus on local and global outreach, two times a year, we update the body on what God is doing in the field and encourage support of specific organizations and partnerships where we have trusted relationships. In some cases, those relationships have spanned decades.
We encourage you to be with us this weekend for a heart-stirring time in God’s Word, as we learn of the exciting opportunities He’s setting before us to make Him known locally and globally.
Relief Weekend is a time when we focus on physical and humanitarian needs, remembering the poor, oppressed, abandoned and marginalized, in our neighborhoods and around the world. In the services this weekend, we’ll receive a Thanksgiving Offering as an expression of our worship of Jesus & our love for those who need Him.
From Rockwood to Africa, Jesus is calling us to join Him in bringing life, hope, forgiveness and healing to weary and broken hearts through these organizations that we’ve partnered with.
We look forward to being with you!
